Year 9
If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), each year at their annual review, their progress and support should be reviewed by you and the school. In Year 9, this will continue, but the focus of the review should change. It is important that you participate in the annual review process, and that your child’s views and wishes are central in all decisions.
The annual review in Year 9 should focus on planning ahead, thinking about what will happen after Year 11 and beyond, as they prepare for adulthood – will your child stay on at school, or move to a college or vocational setting? What are their strengths and interests? What do they hope to do in the future? What support and resources will they need to help them achieve this?
Here are some links to information from organisations around the country, about what should happen in the Year 9 annual review and how to plan for the transition to post 16:
Year 10
When your child is in Year 10, it’s a good idea to visit open days at 6th forms and further education colleges.
Info about Haringey 6th forms and colleges can be found here: Sixth form school and college places | Haringey Council
You can also apply to schools/colleges in other boroughs. For colleges and schools in neighbouring boroughs, check out their Local Offer websites:
Visiting schools and colleges will help you understand what kinds of settings and courses are available and their entry criteria (i.e. what your child needs to get on the course – qualifications, skills or level of support).
It’s important to understand the entry criteria, to help your child choose the right course for them. You can also find out what SEND support looks like at different settings and think about practical things like travel routes.
At the beginning of Year 11, you’ll be asked to give two preferences about where you want your child to be educated in Year 12, so it is good to use Year 10 to get as informed as possible about what’s out there and what may be suitable for your child.
Your child’s school may also have a careers adviser who can guide you and your child about different options.
Have your questions ready – you might want to ask things like:
- What support do you offer for students with EHCPs?
- Is there a dedicated SEND team in site?
- How will my child be supported while they are getting used to their new school?
- What does a typical week look like here?
Up to date EHCP
It’s also important to make sure that your child’s EHC Plan contains up to date information about your child, because this is the document that Haringey will use when they are writing to colleges and schools to see if they can meet your child’s needs.
Haringey aim to update all EHC Plans by November/December of Year 11 following the annual review held in the summer term of Year 10 or autumn term of Year 11.
Before the annual review meeting, you can prepare by checking your child’s plan and highlighting what might need to change. If you need help with this, please contact SENDIASS - Markfield
